Hi Meliza,
Two out of the three gals in my troupe (I being one of them) are plus sized gals. We saw your performance at TC and we just love you! You are truly an inspiration.
Do you have any recommendations for us big girls who are attempting back bends/laybacks all the way to the floor? We can get pretty far but we have a problem with the getting down to the floor from standing and then having our backs touch or come close to the floor. Anything you can say would be great! Oh I should mention that we don't have any pain when practicing and stretching and we can get really close to the floor...I think for me it's just a fear of going from a standing position to a back bend to being on the floor. Also, what position are your feet in? No matter what I do my feet feel very uncomfortable! Thanks!

Re: Meliza...got advice for big girls and laybacks?
Thu, September 8, 2005 - 4:07 PMWhen I first decided I wanted to do floorwork sitting on my knees was uncomfortable. So anytime I was home watching TV I sat on my knees to get comfortable in that position. Today if I sit on my knees with my legs open my butt doesn't touch the floor. A lot of people think it has to in order to get your back on the floor but nope it doesn't.
My first recommendation is to practice building your strength and flexibility and eventually you'll get there. I really don't have anything original to say. Sit on your knees and lean back as far as you can and come back up. The yoga pose ustrasana (camel) is also really good. Stand on your knees, push your hips forward, grab your ankles and drop your head back. I have really strong legs and I use them a lot when doing standing back bend floor touches and all my floor work. My thighs pull me up.
At times I get scared too. We did a spin into a drop like thing at Tribal Fest that I seriously did the first time on stage. On stage I'm in performance mode and have no fear. I do have to say that it's not uncommon to hit your head on the floor. I've seen and heard it quite a few times and have done it myself. It doesn't take long before you figure out how far to go back w/o hitting your head on the floor.
For standing back bends my legs are wide and my feet are slightly turned out. Hips pushed forward. On the floor I'm on the tops of my feet and my feet are straight. I think Steph turns hers out but that doesn't work for me.
At the next event grab me and I'll explain in person, show you what I do, etc. -
