In our usual style, SIS is throwing a Black and White Ball to accompany our Star Belly Dance Contest. So, start getting your black and white costumes ready, we love seeing all of you dressed up in the style of our theme, it really makes for a fun party! "Night At Casablanca" and "Enchanted Camelot" proved to us that the people truly make this event as fabulous as it is! We really love having this party and have heard back that you do too!
Each year we have seen such great performers! We are so proud to present this level of entertainment to our party goers and this year, we will have added a few more surprises to further heap on the joy and fun this event always brings! We look forward to seeing you there!!!

What: This is going to be a fun-filled theme party and a Belly Dance Competition all in one. There will be 3 different categories for soloists: The Star Cabaret Performer, The Star Fusion Performer and Grand Diva Performer. Attendees will also have an opportunity to dress the part, dance to fun music and enjoy wine and goodies, participate in a silent auction, purchase items from a well known vendor, and much, much more.

Beach Party!!

Ok, so I am hijacking your tribe for the moment- sorry. But we are having a Post 4th of July-BBQ-Bonefire-Bellydance-Beach Party!!! If you lovely ladies want to have some fun on the beach in San Luis Obispo, then come on down! It will be on July 8th at Port San Luis in Avila Beach. We will be starting in the AM and going until it is bed time. Bring your drums for playing, feet for dancing, and anything you want to throw on the BBQ. Alcohol is technically not permitted on the beach, but since I very rarely follow the rules, I wil tell you to bring it but keep it hidden!! We will have a volley ball net up, and music running non-stop so come on down and join in the fun!!

Tribal Fest Picnic

We're doing it again! In keeping with tradition we're having a post-performance picnic on Saturday. We'll be outside on the back lawn behind the dressing room. If there is vending back there this year we'll be somewhere in the vicinity.

One More Kitty!

We’re really excited to welcome Janice Solimeno as the newest member of Bastet. Janice has a solid dance background that began with jazz, modern and ballet. She finally found music, rhythms and costuming that fit her spirit while watching Ultra Gypsy perform at the Desert Dance Festival. After debuting as a member of Ultra Gypsy in January 2001, Janice co-founded The Indigo with Rachel Brice in 2003 and has been a guest dancer with several other groups including Del Fuego fire dance and Bastet. She has been teaching for 2 years at her studio, Sol Studio in Half Moon Bay. We’re really happy to have her with us!

Electric Vardo started with DJ Amar, DJ Sep, Ultra Gypsy, & DJ Dragonfly, bringing in the amazing talents of Frederique & Belly Groove, Cheb i Sabbah, Janaka and Dhamaal, Dhol Rhythms Bhangra dance troupe, Turbo Tabla, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience, Tabla Rasa, Kitundu, & many others.

After months running as a primary performer, it seemed best that Frederique join as a promoter. As of October, Frederique came on as an official promoter and joined the Electric Vardo Collective/Family, and together with DJ Sep and Amar, brought in a spectacular performance with Boom Boom Bollywood, Joined by Ultra Gypsy's Jill Parker, Vicki Virk of Dhol Rhythms, and DJ Layla from Portland Oregon.

In November we were joined by Sila and the Afrofunk Experience for a benefit for Kashmir.

Our next show is another benefit for the Kashmir earthquake in Pakistan/India featuring a spectacular lineup with the Nekyia's Kristina Canizares, Clandestine, Embarka Soundsystem feat. Jef Stott & SooozhyQ, & Belly Groove with DJ Amar, plus more special guests.

Volunteers for Blood Moon Performance!

We are looking for 5 volunteers to help us with our Blood Moon performance. We'd need your time for 10 minutes (during our set) to help us out - it's not a dancing part but rather help with some props... You'd need to come to one rehearsal prior to the show (in Oakland on a Sunday before the show) and to the dress rehearsal (the day of the show). We'd ask that you wear black for the performance. Hello Belly Beauties, Art Mavens, Fashionistas and Delirious Denizens of the Underground Dance Scene

I have a delicious Tribal-Funky Freakfest to offer you this Saturday night…It’s an art and dance party that will leave you grateful that ya mama gave you the admission ticket to life.

For years, David Starfire and I have been DJing some sweet and crazy events (mostly in the Bay Area) where Breakbeats merge with World Dance Beatz. We have been wanting to create more of these Ethno Tribal Dance events here for our Southern California Dance Community.

Shapeshifters is the first such collaboration.

At ShapeShifters there will be an indoor room devoted to Funky Breaks with local legends Patricio, Ooah, David and Christian. Then outside, on the patio, the music will be devoted to delicious groovy Breaks and Tribal Beatz with strong flavas of India, Arabia and Africa.

If you love to Belly Dance or if you love Tribal Drums and Rhythms, you will want to visit the patio! Joining me there on the World Dance Beatz Crew will be Dandelion, Imagika and Tamer.

Dandelion has DJed across much of India. DJ Imagika is a belly dancer herself. Tamer's family is from Egypt, so he knows how to support you in the shimmy and shake. I have DJed Ethno Tribal dance sets across the country for crowds of over a thousand dancers (see my tribe photo album for the fun dance pixs). So we are prepared to dish it out for ya!

At 11:00 on the patio, I will be playing a set that will be begin BellydanceFunkySensual and will build to rock your sexy asses with bootie slammin Tribal Breaks and Beatz!

Out of respect for the neighborhood, we will have to chill out the music on the patio at about 1:00 AM. --- SO IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE OUR EROTIC EXOTIC PATIO DANCE SCENE, PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY.

MADAD: Red Cross Benefit 10/9 in SF

Madad: A Benefit for the Red Cross
$10 suggested donation (but we'll take more, of course)

Madad, a Hindi word for "relief" and "aid," seemed like a perfect
title for this benefit. Lenay of n.o.madic tribal (a New Orleans
tribal belly dance troupe) and Clandestine have organized an evening
of belly dance, bhangra, and go-go performances to help raise money
for the Red Cross. All door proceeds go to the Red Cross (thanks DNA
Lounge!), so not only will you see a kickass show with some of the
finest local dance talent, you will also get some good karma.
We are also collecting costume donations for displaced New Orleans
belly dancers, so feel free to bring any costuming, jewelry, etc.
you'd like to donate and give it to the door person.
Vicki of Dhol Rhythms will give a free bhangra dance lesson right
before the intermission so you can shake your groove thing to the DJs
and try out your new moves!

While practicing laybacks my troupemates had the typical pain in their thighs from over stretching, etc. I however had severe hip pain. My legs don't straighten all the way unless sitting on the floor...any other time they won't go straight because my hips lock up. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this problem? My thighs didn't hurt at all and if my hips hadn't been hurting so bad I would have been able to do the laybacks without any problem...I can do them but my hips just aren't right and I'm afraid of hurting myself. Is there anything I can do to fix the prob?

Also, for a few days afterwards my left knee hurts really bad...to the point where I can't do squats and it hurts to stand up...is that normal?

Meliza...got advice for big girls and laybacks?

Hi Meliza,

Two out of the three gals in my troupe (I being one of them) are plus sized gals. We saw your performance at TC and we just love you! You are truly an inspiration.

Do you have any recommendations for us big girls who are attempting back bends/laybacks all the way to the floor? We can get pretty far but we have a problem with the getting down to the floor from standing and then having our backs touch or come close to the floor. Anything you can say would be great! Oh I should mention that we don't have any pain when practicing and stretching and we can get really close to the floor...I think for me it's just a fear of going from a standing position to a back bend to being on the floor. Also, what position are your feet in? No matter what I do my feet feel very uncomfortable! Thanks!

Hello Burning People,

I am super excited to be DJing for you at the Hookadome’s Fire Spin Jam, one of Burningman’s most thrilling ethnic dance events. The fun will begin on Wednesday night, sometime after 9:00 PM. Clan Destino kicks off the night with aerial, belly dance and fire performances, and then the Fire Spin Jam begins. We will dance until kerosene runs out.... Haha!

Because this is a Hookadome outdoor dance night, I plan to spin a kick-ass set. However, to give you expressive dancers a variety of tempos to work with, the music will be punctuated with funky midtempo dance music that will make your hips get slinky and reckless.

I will be playing a melodic set of deep, bass-heavy breaks house and funk of Middle Eastern, Asian and African origin. I will also be mixing it up with Bellydance and Bhangra music you will love.

To all you African Dancers, Tribal Bellydancers and Indian Temple Dancers, you don't need to have fire tools. There will be lots of great music that will appeal to you.

Tribal Fest Picnic

Mahalia’s is coming to town to teach her Stage Presence: From Now to Wow workshop. Her workshop is sold out at Tribal Fest so if you weren’t able to get one of the coveted slots this is your opportunity.

Stage presence is often the thing that separates an ok performance from a magnificent performance. Mahalia will teach you tricks to enhance your performance and take it to the next level where you can entertain your audience every time. This class will include simple combos and techniques to make them fun and entertaining. Be prepared to sweat, have fun, and go away a stage presence pro.

Uploaded my favorite Bastet statue - her as a protectoress of children (see the kitties at her feet?) Some more info:

Cult Center: Bubastis in the Delta.

Attributes: As a sun goddess she represents the warm, life giving power of the sun. Her cult appears as early as the Second Dynasty. Like a cat, she was admired for her agility and strength. Bast defended Ra against the serpent Apep.

Representation: A woman with the head of a domesticated cat, sometimes holding a sistrum.

Relations: Daughter and wife of Ra, mother of Khensu and Maahes.

Other Names: Bast.
